Outdoor kitchens are very popular.  You may choose to build one on a patio or a deck.  If you have an existing deck, you would be wise to hire a professional to check if the deck is able to support the extra weight of the outdoor equipment, cabinetry, and furniture.  The grilling area has to be placed away from combustible surfaces like wood or vinyl.  You may want to consider installing or hooking up to a gas line.  You will want to choose a covered area or construct one.  Cabinetry must be made or purchased with treated lumber, tile, stone, cement backed boards, etc. that can withstand the effects of the weather.  Stainless steel gas grills range in size from 15 to 26 inches deep and are commonly at least 4 feet wide and come in a wide variety of prices based on their features.  Countertops must also be waterproof such as granite, tile, stainless steel, concrete, etc.  Outdoor refrigerators are also making the scene complete with locked storage.  It is very convenient to have a sink by the grill for rinsing food, adding water to recipes, washing hands, etc.  

​Modular units are very practical.  I especially like the Sam's Club unit that is modestly prices at $799.  The Sam's unit features three main burners, one infrared burner, one side burner, motorized rotisserie, heavy-duty grill cover, and a removable icebox.  It comes in a natural gas or LP model.

​The premium modular model is made by Viking which allows you to pick the style of the outdoor kitchen/grill/refrigeration center that you want.  A Viking range and sink are pictured below.

​Local building codes must be observed in the construction of this project.  Due to these codes and permitting being an issue, a designer is recommended since they are up on the current regulations.

Home Depot has an article on their website about what to consider when buying pavers for the patio, porch, driveway, etc.   Pavers are made of different materials such as natural stone, brick, and concrete. They can be bought in different finishes and textures. 

First identify  the location of the pavers since this will determine what type of material you need and can afford.   They are often used in pathways, as stepping stones, on walkways, on patios, and driveways.   Decorative stones are more expensive and are usually used as stepping stones.  Brick pavers are usually used on driveways, paths, and edging.  Limestone pavers are the strongest.

​A color has to be chosen usually with the color of the house in mind.  Colors range from earth tones, terracotta, browns, rusts, golds, whites, etc.  Often a blend of colors is chosen or a pattern is planned out before the purchase.  Patterns such as herringbone, basket-weave, circular, or fan designs are popular.

​Additional tips:  Buy extra pavers for pattern matching or replacement of broken pieces.  Paths are generally at least 3 feet wide.  Clean the pavers with a mix of 10 parts water with one part vinegar.  

After installation, it is advised that the project be sealed to add to their longevity and to cut down on staining.

Now that it is spring, we are out working in your yards to beautify our surroundings.  To strengthen or improve your lawn, you would be wise to test your soil to see what might be lacking.  You can pick up an inexpensive soil testing kit at most home centers.  Talk with garden center employees, lawn care workers, and local agricultural centers.  You can also contact a Master Gardener in your county. They have meetings and lessons at various locations on a variety of topics.  You may even want to pursue the Master Gardener certification. A wealth of information can be gathered from your local Agricultural County Extension Service. Hillsborough's Agricultural County Extension Office contact information can be found here.  They are affiliated with the University of Florida.  They provide advice on what may need to be added to your soil and what variety of grass is best for your property.

Alfresco means taking place in the open air, in other words, outdoors.  When it comes to lounging, dining, reading, you can't beat the great outdoors for the perfect setting.  Alfresco designs are everywhere in 2017.  Checkout this Pinterest site.  I often get inspiration from roaming in two of my favorite outdoor stores Old Time Pottery and Rural King.  You never know what you will find.
