There are different qualities of crystal.  Crystal reflects light with a dazzling display of brilliance.  The better the quality and cut of the crystal the better the crystal surface is to project that display.   Strass crystal is widely believed to be of the highest quality and is manufactured in Austria.  Read the article from Shades of Light that describes the various crystal types from Strass to  Aurora Borealis Crystals to determine the best type for you to purchase.

HOW TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT LAMPSHADE SIZE
Looking for some help selecting a new lamp shade? We have pulled together a few guides to help answer your questions, including one we hear a lot. “How do you measure a lamp shade?”

  1. Measure across the TOP of the lamp shade
  2. Measure across the BOTTOM of the lamp shade
  3. Measure along the SLANT (side) of the lamp shade
These are the 3 dimensions you will see listed with most lamp shades (Top x Bottom x Slant). A four dimension that can also be helpful is measuring the height straight from top to bottom. This can will be helpful with some of the “rules of thumb” below.

LAMPSHADE SELECTION GUIDELINES
  1. The more basic the shape of the body of the lamp, the more varied styles of shades it can take.
  2. Repeat the shape(s) in the lamp body in the shade shape; i.e., a round lamp on a square base can take a shade with a rounded top and square bottom.
  3. The diameter of the bottom of the shade should not be greater than the height of the lamp body (to the bottom of the socket).
  4. Match lampshade colors to the trim color in your room and the tones in the lamp body. Don’t be afraid of black or color as an accent.
  5. Consider your wattage needs! The lampshade (not the lamp body) determines maximum wattage allowed.
  6. Consider the style of the lamp when selecting a shade. A busy lamp generally calls for a plainer shade.
  7. For DRAMA, try thinking outside the box! Put a deep cone shade on a short round ball base, a glossy white shade on a beige stone vase, a cube shade on a stacked ball lamp, a red or black shade on an Oriental base, etc.

In the kitchen, clear, well-lit areas in the counter space is necessary for safe food preparation.  To accomplish this, install under cabinet lighting.

The dining room needs a dramatic, decorative chandelier that can be adjusted for ambient lighting.

The bathroom lighting should be a combination of soft lighting as given off by wall scones combined with a bar light as shown below needed for bright lighting to apply make up.

Your living room needs to have various types of lighting depending on the situation.  It is recommended that a combination of floor and table lamps be used with a chandelier.

Of course, natural lighting is the preferred source of illumination but it is not always possible to achieve due to the layout of a room or the need for privacy.  Here are some tips to brighten a room without too much fuss.
-Paint the room white.
-Hang pictures in white frames.
-Decorate windows with white curtains, drapes, shades, or shutters.
-Decorate with white furniture pieces.
-Use a bedspread with light colors.
-Install wall scones on either side of a mirror or above a dresser or bathroom vanity.  Shades on the scones       will help direct the light where you want it.
-Use blonde wood or white woodwork.
-Exchange flush mounted ceiling lights with pendant lighting.
-Install picture lamps.
-Update light bulbs that have a brighter output.
-Use bulbs in daylight or true white tones instead of blue or yellow tones.

Lighting Suggestions by Room

5/8/2017

Lighting effects our mood and comfort level.  Try working in an office with fluorescent lighting day after day.  Employees have been known to develop irritated eyes and headaches under such conditions. The ideal office lighting would be natural light, which is very often not possible.

Let's consider the HOME OFFICE set-up.  The correct lighting configuration is very important to establish a relaxed, stress-free environment where you can be productive.  If the lighting is too harsh, you will be anxious and tense.  If you lack natural lighting in your work space, purchase a floor lamp, overhead light, desk lamp, or task/angled lamp to illuminate a specific area.  Avoid computer screen glare by cleaning your monitor regularly, angle the screen correctly, adjust the screen brightness, install an anti-glare screen, and avoid lighting that reflects off the monitor.

To further our adventure into proper lighting, find below beautiful appointed rooms with the perfect lighting complements as designed by OKO.  #dreamlandinteriors

The Future of Lighting - LED Bulbs

4/27/2017

The LED lighting craze started with our Christmas lights and moved to our flat screen televisions.  Now the future of lighting is moving toward LED bulbs at a rapid pace.  You can purchase LED lights now in different light levels, light colors, energy consumptions, and bulb types.  These bulbs are found in a variety of fixtures, in different colors, in different styles, and are presently compatible with dimmers.  Bulbs vary in shape:  omnidirectional, globe, candelabra/flame, track, and flood.  It is really a no brainer since using them instead of the incandescent bulbs cost less and lasts 25 times longer.

I recently went bulb shopping at Home Depot for a burned out oven fan bulb.  It was a new hood with a specialty bulb.  The incadescent bulb had burned out in 4 months.  The salesman at Home Depot explained that the LED bulb burned cooler plus would last for 22 years.  The incandescent would last 4 months at $5.35 versus the LED lasting  22 years at $12.00.  The answer seems pretty clear.
