The New School Year Is Around the Corner.  How Can We Organize Those Supplies?

7/31/2017

I don't know about you, but I have office supplies all over my house.  I was looking for a better way to store them.  Here are some clever ideas.  I really liked the idea of buying an old dresser or buffet and painting it with chalkboard paint so that you can label the drawers easily.  If you really get serious and decide on building or decorating a home office, give us a call.  We have plenty of experience in that department. Most of the new homes that we design have both home offices and theater rooms now.

Unique Ways to Display A Flat Screen TV

7/30/2017

House Beautiful featured an article showcasing ways to attractively display a flat screen tv in various rooms of your house.  One designer, Mark Egerstrom, displayed the tv behind a piece of art.  Another designer placed the tv on a decorative easel.  If you want to really conceal one, mount it on the wall behind a pull down wall map.  Another convenient location could be under a desk.  Many people have tvs in their kitchen. You might want to consider installing one above the refrigerator.  In the bath, a framed alcove could be built to hide the tv away so that it is placed in view from the tub.  My favorite  idea displayed a tv behind mirrored doors as shown by designer, Nina Farmer.

Make Kid Friendly Spots in Your Home

We all want to encourage our children to spend time with the family and engage in educational, fun activities.  You can do just that by setting up areas in the home for the child to work and play so they are not isolated in a playroom or bedroom during there entire time at home.  Here are some suggestions:

1.  Have a place in the dining room for books and games.  Shelving/bookcase would be ideal.

2.  Install a chalkboard wall in the kitchen or family room.

3.  Purchase adjustable counter stools so that the child can be comfortable as they grow and work and play.

4.  Purchase a large wall clock with numbers so that the child can easily learn to tell time.  Avoid having only digital clocks.

5.  Designate an area to display the child's work.

6.  Have art supplies that are washable within easy reach.

7.  Set up a play table in the living room (maybe behind the couch) for puzzles, coloring supplies,  Legos, etc.

8.  Use carpet tiles or a washable throw rug in kid's play areas.

How to Accessorize Your Walls

7/25/2017

It can be challenging to position a mixture of paintings, prints, and photographs to create a thing of beauty and to display our interests.  A piece of art can set the mood for the whole room.  Designers and art dealers stress the importance of choosing pieces that mean something to us.  There are tips to help us achieve that perfect gallery look.

First consider the size of the piece needed.  A large art piece should fill 2/3 to 3/4 percent of the wall space. The piece should be centered at eye level based on if you mostly stand or sit in the space.  If the room has an 8 foot ceiling, the center of the picture should be approximately 5 foot from the floor.  If you are hanging a piece over a piece of furniture, hang the art 6 to 12 inches above the furniture and it should be 60% to 90% the width of the furniture.

Photographs look best mounted in acrylic or plexiglass frames.  Sometimes just reframing a piece of art or regrouping pieces that are already owned can make all the difference.  Groupings should have 2 inches between each side.  It is wise to plan out the layout of a grouping by using paper cut outs and arranging and pinning them on the wall to be decorated.

Some other tricks that designers use:
-If there is no window above a sink, take a photo of your favorite scene or purchase a scenic picture to hang over the sink.
-Purchase an attractive textile that blends with your room colors and mount it on a canvas.
-Choose accessories that pick up the colors in a featured work of art.
-Choose an art piece as the inspiration piece for a room's design.
-Don't forget art can be displayed in non-traditional places such as laundry rooms, porches, home offices, and entry ways.
-Make sure art that is hung in wet areas is mounted under glass.

Tile from A to Z

Do you know the difference between granite and travertine?  Did you know that tile is graded based on its abrasion resistance from 0 to 5?  For example, porcelain enamel is graded a 0 on this scale.  Did you know that tile is also graded on its moisture absorption from .5% to 20%?  You can purchase subway, tumbled, glazed, or even textured tile.  When planning a tile purchase, it is recommended that you order an additional 10% in case of cutting errors or breakage.

I recently came across an article by Houzz written by Janet Dunn that does a good job of explaining the different types of tiles and their uses.

If you are in need of help with your next tiling project, consider Dreamland Interiors.  We work with companies that offer high quality materials for affordable prices.  You can see some of our completed projects on our homepage.
