Who doesn't marvel at and enjoy using the internet connected light, thermostat, music, printer, smart tv, etc. systems?  Unfortunately there are pirates out there using malware to compromise the device's data and even control the device remotely.  Hackers are in the business of stealing data and selling it to the highest bidder.  Some malware now can lock access to the device and demand a ransom for you to have the use of the device again.  

I know it is inconvenient, but the best safeguard against such activity is to update the device's software frequently to obtain the latest security patches and safeguards.  Recently, I was having trouble with my Samsung smart tv.  The phone technician said that I was still trying to operate with the 2014 operating system that was installed on the new tv.  It was a simple fix by going into the menu, the system folder, and selecting install updates.

Further steps for you to take to insure your protection are:

1.  Read the terms and conditions of your devices paying close attention to what data the device will collect and how it might be shared.

2.  Thoughtfully install the new device using the set-up instructions carefully deciding which features are to be default, enabled, disabled.

3.  Choose your own username and password and record it in a safe place.

4.  Most importantly--update the software on the device as well as the security updates periodically.  If the device does not have the capability to have its software updated, I would consider not purchasing that model.

5.  You can purchase a home network security device that can discover and protect your smart devices.
