How We Hate Those Cluttered Kitchen Counters

The number one complaint that homeowners have concerning their kitchens is cluttered kitchen counters.  A new kitchen design could remedy some of the clutter if special cabinet areas are planned, such as pull-out waste basket, pull-out recycling basket, cookie sheet/tray organizer, revolving corner cabinet, drawer organizers, pull-out knife block, appliance garage or appliance cabinet, deep drawers for small appliances, pull out smaller baskets.  It is so much easier to keep  a clean house, a clean kitchen when you have the room to find a proper place for each item.

Hidden Storage Space

Living in Florida without a basement and an attic too hot to really utilize, I am always looking for storage space.  I like this idea of using columns with panel doors to conceal stored items such as cookbooks, glassware, etc.

The Beauty of Window Seats

9/27/2017

I recently read an article on the This Old House website explaining that if you are in need of extra storage or seating, consider building a window seat.  They can be made extra comfortable by adding a cushioned top.  If they are placed in a window area, it is a great place to view the outdoors.

A window seat should be at least 16 to 20 inches deep, 30 inches long, and about 18 inches high for comfort.  You can build a 3 foot long DIY window seat for $100-$300.  If you use stock cabintry, the cost will be on the higher end.  Dreamland Interiors would be glad to assist in planning and constructing a custom window seat for your home.

Window seats can be placed about anywhere in the home including the entryway, bedroom, den, living room, kitchen, bathroom, etc.  If you place one in a kitchen or bathroom, you would be wise to use outdoor fabrics for the cushions.

How to Save Money on Countertops

Marble and granite are beautiful surfaces but are costly.  A technique designers use to save the homeowner 40% to 50% of the material costs is to disguise the thickness of the countertop.  You could actually make the counter appear 3" thick while really only using 3/4" of the more expensive material.

The stone fabricators use a stone slab a little longer than needed by 6-8 in.  The fabricator adds a mitered edge to the slab with the excess length. The stone vein needs to continue from the edge down the side.

This technique could be used in the kitchen, on a bathroom vanity, on a dining room table, a buffet, etc.

Built-in Bookshelves Are Not Only Useful But Attractive

An easy way to install bookshelves and make them appear built-in is to purchase prefabricated bookshelves from a store such as IKEA and dress them up with crown molding.  If you are in search of a spot to install built-in bookcases, check out the space around your doors or windows.  Dress up bookshelves by installing picture lights above the top-most shelf and direct the beam downward.  Another choice would be to have built-in shelves constructed above a buffet, counter, console, window seat, etc.
Perhaps you have open shelving in your kitchen, pantry, dining room, etc. that you could match and have extended.
