Simple Ways to Make A Kitchen Cozier

5/31/2017

Families often gather in the kitchen not only for eating but to visit and even work.  How can we make all that stainless steel and tile cozier?  I found the following pictures that display success in personalizing the kitchen and making it a warm and friendly place.

In the first kitchen (image provided by DeVol Kitchen), they paired brass and marble and painted wood cabinetry with paintings, flowers, personal family items, and a jewel tone paint.  A vintage rug would be another good addition.

Another kitchen (photo by My Paradissi), provided a comfortable seating spot and added that soft rug.

How to Generate Positive Instead of Negative Energy in a Home

5/30/2017

Experts in the field of Feng Shui and Chi (positive energy) recommend the following practices to improve the positive energy in your home:
-Open up doors and windows to create a draft to air out your home and remove stale air.
-Freshen up pillows and blankets by tossing them in the dryer.
-Rid your home of broken things that cannot be repaired.  Remove clutter which is key to eliminating                     stress.
-Cut up citrus and place it in containers around the house for a day to add a refreshing scent.
-Consider the colors used in your home.  You may need to consult a designer.  Yellow, for example, will                 lift your mood.  Dark furniture and paint colors often generate negative energy.
-Wipe down surfaces with a citrus base product to create a clean slate and remove any negativity.
-Add mirrors to create positive energy.
-Choose furniture and accent pieces without sharp edges.

There is a website sponsored by the Energy Muse that can offer additional tips to help you with the removal of any home gloom.

Videos on Using Caulk and Cleaning Grout

I was recently looking for some advice on  repairing the cracks in our driveway.  I came across a video on the Today's Homeowners website explaining the process in a very concise way.  Other videos that I found helpful were titled:  How to Seal Tile Grout, Sealing Outside Cracks, How to Clean Stained Grout, How to Caulk Around a Tub.  They recommend the proper products to use as well as show the process being completed and even give the steps to complete the job in written form.  Happy Caulking!

Seven Cleaning Tricks for the Bathroom

5/28/2017

I was watching a video on how to attack the hard to clean areas in the bathroom.  The utube video showed a super-duper way to get the toilet bowls, top and bottom, sparkling clean with white vinegar. Black tea was used to clean mirrors and glass. Fixtures were cleaned with a lemon.  The toilet brush and toothbrush holders and soap dish were also tackled.  I even observed a new way to vacuum the dryer lint trap.  Visit this Site.

DIY Potty Pods

5/27/2017

Save yourself some money and have a sparkling clean toilet bowl by making your own potty pods.  Ingredients needed are 1 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup powdered citric acid, and 1 tablespoon plus dish soap, preferably Dawn.  After mixing these ingredients into a dough like consistency, press into a silicon ice cube tray (small size cubes).  Freeze tray for 30 minutes.  Remove pods to a jar and place in the bathroom to be used with flushes.  I think I would use every third or fourth flush, but they can be used with every flush. You will still have to use your toilet brush to periodically clean under the rim. Watch this video to learn the specific process to accomplish this project. #dreamlandinteriors

The May, 2017 issue of Custom Home reports that the demand for new homes is up almost 10%.   The number one type of buyer is the family with children with most in this group in the market for their first home.  The next largest group are couples without children/empty-nesters.  Since over 65% of the present home buyers are first time home buyers, they are in the market for affordable new homes. The majority of buyers surveyed want ranch homes with large backyards.  75% want three bedrooms.  Buyers make their buying decision based first on the home's kitchen, next on the master bedroom, and then on the garage.

New JELD-WEN Windows - AuraLast Wood Windows

5/25/2017

I just read about an 18 month experiment conducted in Hilo, Hawaii by JELD-WEN windows.  Did you know that the #1 pest in Hawaii is the termite?  JELD-WEN chose Hawaii because of the termites and moisture.  They have developed a new treatment for their windows called AuraLast.  JW constructed two structures on a termite colony--one structure of the AuraLast Wood Windows and one with regular wood windows.  At the end of the 18 months, there was no rotting, water swelling, or termite damage with the AuraLast windows.  They just needed wiped down and repainted.  The regular wood windows were reduced to spongy wood scraps. JELD-WEN's new window manufacturing process does not involve dipping the wood into a vat of harmful chemicals, as is typically done. Wood in the AuraLast process undergoes a surface-to-core treatment through a proprietary vacuum/pressure process. This environmentally-safe, water-based application fortifies wood to the core. JW manufactures doors as well as windows.  Visit their website to see the many styles to choose from.

Working with a Small Bathroom Space

5/24/2017

If you have a small bathroom space and are planning to remodel, consider the following advice to add some space.  Install a wall-mounted commode and/or faucets, recessed medicine cabinet, and a glass enclosure around the shower area.  Kohler K-6299-0 Veil model wall-mounted commode was awarded 8 out of 10 stars for its function, design, and compactness.  A glass shower enclosure will give the room the appearance of openness.

Help for Your Lawn

Now that it is spring, we are out working in your yards to beautify our surroundings.  To strengthen or improve your lawn, you would be wise to test your soil to see what might be lacking.  You can pick up an inexpensive soil testing kit at most home centers.  Talk with garden center employees, lawn care workers, and local agricultural centers.  You can also contact a Master Gardener in your county. They have meetings and lessons at various locations on a variety of topics.  You may even want to pursue the Master Gardener certification. A wealth of information can be gathered from your local Agricultural County Extension Service. Hillsborough's Agricultural County Extension Office contact information can be found here.  They are affiliated with the University of Florida.  They provide advice on what may need to be added to your soil and what variety of grass is best for your property.
                                                                 Happy Gardening! #dreamlandinteriors
