Make Kid Friendly Spots in Your Home

We all want to encourage our children to spend time with the family and engage in educational, fun activities. You can do just that by setting up areas in the home for the child to work and play so they are not isolated in a playroom or bedroom during there entire time at home. Here are some suggestions:

1. Have a place in the dining room for books and games. Shelving/bookcase would be ideal.

2. Install a chalkboard wall in the kitchen or family room.

3. Purchase adjustable counter stools so that the child can be comfortable as they grow and work and play.

4. Purchase a large wall clock with numbers so that the child can easily learn to tell time. Avoid having only digital clocks.

5. Designate an area to display the child's work.

6. Have art supplies that are washable within easy reach.

7. Set up a play table in the living room (maybe behind the couch) for puzzles, coloring supplies, Legos, etc.

8. Use carpet tiles or a washable throw rug in kid's play areas.

A fun summer project that can involve the whole family is to give your child's room a new look. Let them make suggestions and selections. Here are some easy and quick transformations.

   -Frame pictures of family and friends to display on dressers, bookcases, or walls. They can take pictures and make the selections.
   -Paint all or part of the room. Fun to bring home paint samples to make a smart decision. Make designs. Use decals.
   -Paint an old dresser or bookcase. Add new knobs.
   -Hang a fancy scarf, fabric, sheer drape, etc. behind the headboard.
   -Set up a painting area for art projects or set up a small table for puzzles or games.
   -Go thrifting and find an old chair to use in a reading corner.
   -Hang a mirror on the wall that will brighten up the room.
   -Add an area rug.
   -Add some decorative bins to organize clothes, toys, craft supplies, etc.
